Disability Benefits That Could Be Available to You

The Social Security Administration (SSA) offers two different programs for people with disabling conditions.

  • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): SSDI is available for people with a work history whose disabling conditions keep them from engaging in substantial gainful activity (SGA).
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI): SSI is available for people who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled and have very low income.

What Conditions Could Qualify Me for Disability Benefits?

The Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Blue Book is an official medical guide used to evaluate disability claims. It lists impairments that qualify for Social Security Disability benefits, detailing medical criteria for adults and children. Meeting these criteria can streamline the approval process for disability benefits under SSDI or SSI programs.

The Blue Book organizes these disorders by the parts of the body they affect:

  • Musculoskeletal Disorders: This includes major dysfunction of joints such as hips, knees, ankles, or shoulders; disorders of the spine like herniated discs or spinal stenosis; amputation of both hands or one hand and one lower extremity; and fractures of the femur, tibia, pelvis, or upper extremities that fail to heal properly or result in severe impairment.
  • Special Senses and Speech Disorders: Conditions include vision loss in both eyes, significant hearing loss (with or without cochlear implants), and speech disorders that severely limit effective communication.
  • Respiratory Disorders: These encompass chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respiratory failure, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, and lung transplants.
  • Cardiovascular Disorders: Qualifying conditions include chronic heart failure, ischemic heart disease (such as coronary artery disease), recurrent arrhythmias, and aneurysms of the aorta or major arteries.
  • Digestive System Disorders: This category covers chronic liver disease, inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, short bowel syndrome, and those who have undergone liver transplantation.
  • Genitourinary Disorders: Eligible conditions include chronic kidney disease requiring regular dialysis or kidney transplantation, and nephrotic syndrome.
  • Hematological Disorders: These involve severe forms of sickle cell disease with complications, chronic anemia that necessitates frequent blood transfusions, and bone marrow failure syndromes.
  • Skin Disorders: Qualifying conditions include extensive burns, severe and treatment-resistant dermatitis, and chronic skin infections that restrict mobility or use of limbs.
  • Endocrine Disorders: Disorders such as diabetes with severe complications (like neuropathy or retinopathy), thyroid disorders, and adrenal gland disorders may qualify.
  • Congenital Disorders: This group includes Down syndrome.
  • Neurological Disorders: This group includes epilepsy that persists despite treatment, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), traumatic brain injury, and disorders affecting the spinal cord.
  • Mental Disorders: Covered conditions include severe and persistent depression, anxiety disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and neurocognitive impairments such as dementia.
  • Cancer (Malignant Neoplastic Diseases): Qualifying cancers include breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, prostate cancer with metastasis or recurrence, pancreatic, liver, esophageal, or brain cancers, and cancers requiring bone marrow or stem cell transplantation.
  • Immune System Disorders: This includes systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), severe rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, HIV/AIDS, and severe Sjögren’s syndrome.

In addition to meeting the medical criteria, there are also technical criteria you must meet. These criteria are complex. Our Sandy Springs Social Security disability attorneys can help you determine whether you may qualify.

Compassionate Allowances (Fast-Track for Severe Conditions)

The SSA also fast-tracks applications for certain conditions such as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), pancreatic cancer, glioblastoma multiforme (aggressive brain cancer), early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, and severe muscular dystrophy.

Qualifying Outside of the Blue Book

While the SSA Blue Book provides a list of medical conditions that may qualify for disability benefits, individuals can still be approved for Social Security Disability (SSD) even if their specific condition is not listed. This is possible through a process known as a “Medical-Vocational Allowance.” In these cases, the Social Security Administration evaluates how a person’s medical condition, even if unlisted, limits their ability to work. Factors such as age, education, work experience, and residual functional capacity (RFC)—a measure of what tasks the individual can still perform—are taken into account.

For example, someone may have a combination of impairments or a rare condition that isn’t explicitly included in the Blue Book but still results in significant physical or mental limitations. If these limitations prevent the person from performing their past work or adjusting to other available work, they may qualify for benefits. Supporting evidence from medical professionals, functional assessments, and detailed documentation of daily limitations is essential in these types of cases.
